The Unique Beautiful Materials Vessel Bricks

Brush marks

My design started it life as ink drawings and you can see the brush marks in the clay. A beautifully articulated surface that captures depth, shadow and movement within the brick itself.

Articulated Surface

Vessels are containers and so are bricks which makes this perfect artistic collaboration.

STUFF

Treasured Objects

Artist Nicola Atkinson explores the complex emotional and physical burdens of material accumulation in her exhibition, "STUFF." The project examines the inherited items passed down by loved ones alongside the artist’s own extensive archive of creative work. The collection is a tangible exploration of human attachment. By highlighting the things we create, the waste we leave behind, and the treasured objects that house our memories

Ceramics from 2009 and 2018

She highlights the tension between the sentimental value of these objects and the overwhelming weight of their preservation. This collection, which includes over a decade of ceramic pieces, serves as a meditation on what society chooses to discard versus what it treasures.

Ultimately, the exhibition questions how much physical property a person truly needs to navigate their life and legacy.

700 Custodians 2026

700 Custodians 2026

Nicola Atkinson’s "STUFF" exhibition serves as a profound meditation on the physical and emotional weight of material possessions. At its core, her artwork confronts a universal dilemma: what are we supposed to do with the things we make, the objects we inherit, and the constant influx of new items?

She invited the public to become custodians. Her stuff became their stuff. 700 custodians were found.

THE STUDIO

When I came up with the idea of Beautiful Materials in 2018 , it seemed to cover lots of things, and I felt that it could be almost everything - paint, wood, light, paper, fabric, stone, music , words, events and also people because they all have a materiality... and could be beautiful.

My artwork is characterised by a restless exploration of materials and making that is evident throughout my practice.

We are all Vessels - Moray Place

We are all vessels, our bodies, our homes, and in our family.

When I was invited by my friends Vivian and Kevin to think about their ‘Greek’ Thompson home on Moray Place, it seemed like the perfect place to set seven bold and colourful Vessels in their windows. The vessels have been the main source of the customary life and mind of the ancient Greeks.

A solo exhibition in Linlithgow Nicola Atkinson

‘Nicola I thought the show was beautiful, and very much of you. It occurred to me this morning that many artists would shy away from a space with so many windows, but your pieces are redolent of curtains, and I don’t mean that in a derogatory way! They do an odd thing of being like window coverings in that space, but not on the windows! It is a wonderful and very unique space and the art is in tune, so the whole piece sings with the space. I think it’s all the pieces together, arranged and talking together in that space, with the bus stop outside its beautiful’
