Beautiful Materials Gallery, The Avenue Shopping Centre

A shopping centre can be a thoughtful place, bringing people together to shop, chat and eat out. It’s a shared space where one’s world is focused, a perfect place to have a gallery and engage with an audience for artworks and ideas.

Vessels : A Conservation about Materials

As this would be the first exhibition in the Beautiful Materials Gallery, I thought it would be perfect to share the process behind my recent solo show in Linlithgow Burgh Halls. The centrality of the vessel in this exhibition reflects my interest in the discipline and history of ceramics.

Press Release

Nicola Atkinson in conversation about her solo exhibition of new works in Linlithgow with Lynsey Moyes, who is a radio producer who has created audio arts content for BBC Radio Scotland, BBC Radio 4 and the Glasgow International Festival of Contemporary Art.

A solo exhibition in Linlithgow Nicola Atkinson

‘Nicola I thought the show was beautiful, and very much of you. It occurred to me this morning that many artists would shy away from a space with so many windows, but your pieces are redolent of curtains, and I don’t mean that in a derogatory way! They do an odd thing of being like window coverings in that space, but not on the windows! It is a wonderful and very unique space and the art is in tune, so the whole piece sings with the space. I think it’s all the pieces together, arranged and talking together in that space, with the bus stop outside its beautiful’
